I was inspired to make a bunch of fondant bees one day, and needed someplace to put them; so I made a beehive cake. I enjoyed creating this cake, and making it come to life.
I used a dark chocholate cake with an 8 inch base and a 6 inch top to give it the look of a classic beehive. The cake is covered with a light yellow buttercream frosting and a darker yellow buttercream to imitate honey dripping down the sides. I made fondant flowers and piped leaves and vines for dramatic effect.
